Embattled Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal has reportedly told a Dutch publication that he used to write for that he is confident he WILL be at Manchester United next season – even without top four finish!
According to widespread reports in British media on Tuesday afternoon, the Dutchman believes the board understands the difficulties he has faced this season during United’s turbulent campaign because of his crippling injury list.
Mirror UK reports that Louis van Gaal believes he will survive as Manchester United boss – even if he misses out on the Champions League. Dutch paper De Telegraaf revealed that 64-year-old was set to remain at Old Trafford and be handed £80m to turn United into title challengers.
But according to Daily Star UK, popular British-based Italian sports journalist, Gabriele Marcotti, who reports for The Times and Corriere dello Sport has hinted that Van Gaal may have had some influence over the story.
“Van Gaal used to be a columnist for De Telegraaf. Now, De Telegraaf report he’s definitely staying.
“No idea if that Telegraaf/LvG staying story is true. But pretty sure it was written with LvG’s blessing,” he tweeted on his handle @Marcotti after the news hit the shelves.
Meanwhile, Mirror UK reports that Van Gaal is particularly delighted by club legend, Sir Alex Ferguson’s public defence of him and feels the United board are behind him. He believes they understand the difficulties he has faced this season during United’s turbulent campaign because of his crippling injury list.
He is also pleased they have recognised that he has successfully blooded so many youngsters this season, such as Marcus Rashford , Jesse Lingard and Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
Van Gaal, 64, hopes to see out the final season of his three-year United deal when he then plans to end his glittering managerial career.
The Dutchman believes the Glazers and the rest of the United hierarchy will be sympathetic if he misses out on their stated goal of a top-four place and Champions League football next season.
United are currently fifth, just a point behind fourth-placed Manchester City, having won four of their last five league games.
Van Gaal is optimistic about United’s FA Cup chances ahead of next week’s quarter-final replay against West Ham at Upton Park and would prefer to lift the trophy over finishing in the top four.
United are forward planning with Van Gaal and the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss is fully involved in discussions over their two-game pre-season tour to China.
The Dutch FA are prepared to offer van Gaal an escape route back to his homeland as their newly-created technical director, but it is understood he would prefer to finish his contract at Old Trafford.
